Canadien Goalie Pads

These are up on Ebay right now. They look to be in wicked shape. Does anyone have any experience with these?

They are a low level pad. They were popular as community league gear. I recall seeing many examples of these pads in poor condition well before other brands would show any wear.

My teamate, Rich Sirois, had a pair of Canadiens in Peoria in 1983. I think he was wearing them a year earlier in Milwaukee too. They were OK pads, not custom though, kind of on the level of Cooper.

Sorry to burst your bubble but, I too, had a pair of these when I was younger and always considered them a cheap version of my Coopers. They were almost "vinyl-ee" , never broke in properly...sorry.
Nice piece of vintage equipment though if you're collecting.

I remember only a few NHL goalies wore Canadien pads...Richard Sevingy being one of them.

I never liked how they looked, they looked stiff, not much bend at knee or ankle area.

They had some cool color schemes though at the time in the mid to late 80's a I recall....until Brians came along and took the color thing to a new level.

D&R,KOHO and CCM also has some cool color designs.

never liked Cooper.....too booring looking.

Maybe only Neums can answer this:
Is there a large difference between Pro pads and what these manufacturers sold at retail?
That would seem to make a huge difference.

When I used my coach's Cooper pads in 78-79, they were 2 years old and great pads, but I had no illusion that they were of the caliber of what Pro's were wearing.

My point is, are these really Professional-caliber, just because they say "PRO" on them?

Re: Canadien Goalie Pads

There was a period of time in the 70's and 80's when Cooper would make one-off gear for pro's and selected clientele. A very nice chap named Norm Widdis managed this division right out of the Cooper head office in Toronto. They would attach a special sewn on label to all of their "custom" gear. For pads it was usually on the upper outside leg. I'm trying to remember what it stated. Something like "Hand made at the Cooper Custom Pro Shop". Later on it became more difficult to identify their pro goalie gear because Cooper came up with labels and screened logos that were very similar but factory manufactured for the masses.

Someone else care to chime in on this one?

EDIT

I looked through some old photos. The labels on my leg pads could not be read but if you look closely on these arm pads you can barely read
"Handmade in Canada by Cooper Custom Pro Shop"

Other than the custom gear makers like Bourdon, Kenesky, Miller, Brown, and Thompson, the only companies making pro level stuff was Cooper, D&R, KOHO, and Canadien. These along with Vaughn were the mass producers. The pro stuff they made was the same as anyone else could get, but a few things could be changed like size or side wings if a pro requested. A lot of the guys I knew just had the trainer order the stock pad.
I had a pair of Cooper gloves made at the Custom Pro Shop and they were done just how I wanted with different finger stalls and palm padding, but the materials and basic configuration of the gloves were the same as a stock pair. There was a time during the 80's when the HM30 cage was in very short supply because of the huge demand for them; I needed cages for the combo masks I was making back then and was only able to get them from the Custom Pro Shop. The cages were a little bit different with a piece of plastic hanging about an inch below the bottom bar. The plastic was stitched into the chin pad.
