Not only do people equate sports with being a major school but they also donate more, which is where UWM adding football would be helpful. And adding a little more college atmosphere to our town would be fun.

1: Tear down the 794 spur. Replace it with a grand boulevard at street level (I believe Norquist tried to do this?).

2: Bike lane on the Hoan Bridge.

3: Tear down... *something* in the Big Arena Hell that is northwest downtown. Bradley Center, Convention Center, i don't care what. The massive grouping of enormous buildings that are empty 95% of the time just *kills* that whole area. Replace it with smaller-scale, multi-use buildings.

4: A boardwalk for the lake -- the traditional, gaudy, touristy, home-grown kind you find all along the Jersey Shore. It doesn't have to be all that big.

4a: A Milwaukee equivalent to Madison's State Street (or Philadelphia's South Street) -- a busy place with lots of business, restaurants, etc. where there's *always* a crowd of people. This is the one big-city thing that Milwaukee really lacks, is a good place to go where you can just disappear into the crowd and wander and people-watch. It's kind of telling that Summerfest wins the people-watching vote every year in the Shepherd's reader poll. Brady Street is slowly heading in the right direction, but it's still many years away, if at all.

From what I hear, tearing down 794 would be nigh impossible to do at this point. It sounded like a cool idea though. Then again, the effect of this would be ruined considering the Art Museum is down Wisconsin Ave.

I was never sold on the Hoan Bridge bike path thing though. That bridge is far too steep and long for a bike path to be effective. It would be cool walking on it though. I wish they could light it up better at night.

Totally agree about the Arena Hell. If I had my way--I would get rid of the Milwaukee Theater (supposed to be nice inside-looks terrible on the outside except the enterance), the Cell, Police building, those hideous buildings near James Lovell/Wells, and develop that Parking Lot at 6th and State. Redevelopment of MacArthur Square and the Pabst Brewery will help. This area does waste alot of potential--considering all the entertainment venues, as well as MATC.

It would be interesting if there could be some kind of marsupial bike path that would hang from 794. The idea is from the marsupial bridge that hangs from the Holton Street Viaduct. I'm not sure how feasible that would be. Otherwise there isn't a good way to get from the Bay View area to downtown by bike.

The next chance we'll get to knock down 794 will be when the freeways are up for reconstruction in 30+ years. By then though, we'll all have our slege-hammers ready and waiting.

-less crime

-smaller and richer population

-a functioning inner city that is safe and clean. Well kept homes much like on the west side.

-all surface lots downtown filled in with buildings

-light rail instead of buses downtown and on the east side

-all proposed high rises be built

-rebirth and renovation of the park system

-Harp lights installed everywhere in the city

-land on the northwest side sold off to developers so the city can focus on problem areas.

How about massively improved universities with international draw instead of just regional/state?

A major, modern, manufacturer such as Tesla Motors, or Solar Panel manufacturers that actually has a future in a post industrial age.

High Speed trains to Chicago, Madison, and MSP

Become the leader in Green Urban design.

and my craziest fantasy, more symbolic than practical - a massive wind turbine on the breakwater at the edge of the harbor - huge and white, in keeping with the "whiteness" of the latest buildings on the lakefront, dynamic and turning in the wind, to prove that this really is a 21st century city. It could probably power a fair bit of downtown too!

^The Milwaukee area has quite a few manufactring companies building things for the future. I am currently proud and content with the major corporations that we have here. You really cant ask for better than Harley, Miller, Rockwell, etc. There is always room for improvement though. Hopefully, we see more high tech stuff in the Valley in the next few decades.

And I hate to say my friend--but that wind turbine would get its own summer lakefront festival called NIMBY-fest. I cant imagine the outrage over people's precious Lake views being destroyed by wind turbines. Personally, I might have to agree though. I love the open water views from the bluff---with nothing on the horizon aside from sailboats.

I would like to see that gas station on St. Paul, across from Hacks torn down and redeveloped. The damn place is barely ever open it seems. That lot across the river needs no mention for my wish to see it finally developed with something amazing.

And after reading about that swanky new resturant on MLK--I of course would love to see the whole street lined with these kinds of establishments. That goes for North Ave. MLK is probally the most beautiful street in the city and one with the most untapped potential. Hopefully all the development on that street downtown (Manpower, Ruvin, etc.) and the new faces in Brewers Hill/Beerline will help along new retail, dining and entertainment.
