RunSearch Discovery Series - How it works

Hi,

The RunSearch Discovery series started about the middle of 2006 as a way for me to have fun while updating the RunSearch engine which was wayyyy out of date. Smackdown5 noticed the sudden huge increase in activity and decided to update the engine from scratch and that's how RunSearch v3 came to be. Now with the release of RunSearch v3 the game I had created ceased to be a necessary activity but I found I could not stop playing, I really liked finding RunBoards that looked nice and wanted a way of saying THANK YOU to all the great RunBoard owners out there... Today others at RunBoard have joined with me and the game is now a three tier system used to choose the Runboard of the Year! I hope you enjoy participating in it as much as we do in creating it emoticon.

We use a combination of keywords and random searches to take a peek at a minimum of 25-100 boards each day. The boards that look interesting by design go into a list where the TRD, RDS and select RSF members pick what we believe are the 10 best boards (to us visually) for the RunSearch Weekly postings. Normally this list is being compiled and voted on by us at least 2 weeks before you see it and we are totally open to suggestions/nominations from anyone who is a board owner or who has a active posting history on any Runboard. When any of us receive a suggestion/nomination we take a look at the current years list and if it has not been listed before then chances are we will at least put the board up for our private voting round to see if it qualifies for a RunSearch Weekly slot. Since all of us work real hard to make choices based on the boards design (as opposed to content) you just might be surprised to see a pagan or atheist or "adult themed" board listed by this Baptist Pastor. I do not discriminate or override a choice based on content emoticon...

After a list is posted for the week we start over again so each week we see new boards (520 new boards each year). To move from the RunSearch Weekly series to the RunSearch SmackDown series a board must place either in first or second place for that weeks voting. In addition to those I create a reserve of the third place winners and about four times a year the highest third place vote getter will be placed in a RunSearch Smackdown to balance each Smackdown at nine boards for each month (the idea is to encourage and promote board owners and give everyone at least a chance to advance). After the December Smackdown is decided in January of the new year we have the grand finale called the RunSearch Thunder and Lightning round where each SmackDown winner and the top eight second place winners go toe to toe for the Board of the Year.

Rule Alpha I am the one that makes the final judgments on disputes but I do listen to the advice of others.

Rules We go by

1. The board MUST be a public board.

why? Because we are asking voters to look at the board and vote on it. It isn't practical to ask everyone to apply for membership in a closed board just so they can see if it is a board they would vote for.

2. A board can only be listed once per year.

why? Because there are several thousand boards being hosted by RunBoard and it isn't fair or right to restrict the search to just the few we might happen happen to like.

3. When discovered for the RunSearch Weekly the board design must normally be the regular design for that board.

why? Because the board is being considered for board of the year and a design that wins based on "Boxing day" or "Easter" would be at a severe disadvantage if it made it to the final rounds. We reserve the right to include a board with simple seasonal layout changes or holiday changes which do not change the general feel of the forum on a case by case basis.

NOTE: This rule ONLY applies to the RunSearch Weekly, it does NOT apply to the SmackDown or Thunder & Lightning Series.

4. Voters know best unless they cheat.

why? Because this is a fun game to see what everyone likes, not just where everyone just happens to be a member. Cheating however can destroy the game since what a cheater is really doing is saying the rest of us don't count. Therefore we now have a rule that didn't exist until 7-2-2007 that goes like this:

A. Cheating on a board vote/poll:
Should evidence be presented which indicates that a board is cheating that board will receive a immediate 20 point deduction on the boards vote total and the board owner will be notified by (in order of attempt) pm, em, or public post on his/her board as a last resort. The board owner then has 24 hours from time of notification to respond unless the problem is discovered on the final day of voting (in which case I can only give 12 hours or it messes up the poll/voting for next weeks RunSearch Weekly).

The board will not be disqualified when these actions occur primarily for the sake of the community that each board represents.

The board in question has the rest of the voting period to try and convince me to modify the penalty but such a modification will never be less than the total forfeiture of all votes that are in question rounded up to the nearest 5 (for example ONE cheater will cost a board a minimum of 5 votes in the contest).

B. Sabotaging a board vote/poll:
Sabotage of a vote (ie trying to make it look like a board is cheating when it is not) results in the offending saboteurs board(s) immediate disqualification.

Definitions:
Cheating - If you or anyone else votes more than once for the same board in any given poll then this is called cheating.

Sabotage - If someone pretends to be from another board for the express purpose of making it look like that board is cheating then that is termed sabotage.

ALL votes made by members with a screen name less than one month old will be subject to review and will not count unless verified as legit.

Should the cheating continue after notification is made then the board WILL be disqualified.
5. We all count and we all deserve respect therefore slamming, bashing, cussing, swearing and accusing others of trickery (or worse) are not allowed. Any posts which violate this rule will be edited to show a Rule 5 violation. Please, do not respond to this type of post, it only encourages bad behavior and distracts from the fun of the contest. The contest is for fun and yes you may put in a funny jab or joke but remember rule alpha above... Continued rule 5 violations will cause a voting penalty to be accessed so if I say you are going to far then just back it down O-Kay.

6. On occasion we have seen polls in both the RunSearch Weekly and RunSearch SmackDown which have ended in a tie after voter validation has been completed. RDS uses a spreadsheet generated Activity Index (commonly referred to as the boards RDS AI) as the first level tie breaker in most cases when this happens.
emoticon6.a When a poll ends with more than 4 boards tied for 1st place RDS may,
emoticontime permitting, hold a 3-day RDS Special Runoff poll with those boards
emoticonwhich are tied to determine the winners and standings.

7. Runboard and the RDS encourage all participants to visit the nominated boards. You are free to represent your board at any boards you are a member of, if it is in keeping with that board's policies. Regardless of any boards policies which you may visit or post on RDS does not condone negative postings of any kind directed towards or about any other board in competition at any level. Posting elsewhere may be considered spam and treated as such. The penalty for deliberate unsolicited spam is minus 1 vote per each occurrence reported. Please, if you believe a violation has occurred PM me with a link so I can verify the violation prior to imposing any penalties concerning spam.

A. Spam

Unless the board you are visiting has a forum that invites advertisements and or spam do not post such on any board. I will deduct 1 point for each and every occurrence that is reported to me after the first report.

This means if you posted a spam message on even one board and I receive 20 separate reports from that board the offender will be docked 20 points (you do the math, even the RunBoard Support board with over 5,600 members would find that kind of penalty a tough one to overcome).

8. Appeals... I am human, I do my best but there are times when I make mistakes. So, unless I say it is a final ruling (whatever it is) you can ask for any of the regular RunSearch group or RunBoard Staff to discuss a ruling with me before I make it (the ruling) final.

Besides myself the current RDS Group (in alphabetical order) is:

Erika E
Jinzleftbuttcheek
Sertab
Vegas Guy

Prizes
Boards that win the RunSearch Weekly competition will be displayed on the RunBoard Directories Header for the RunSearch Engine for one week and/or be listed as the winner in the next weeks poll.

Boards that win the RunSearch SmackDown Discovery of the Month are entitled to place the following 150px x 150px graphic on their board:
ImageImage

Once or twice per year the RDS and Runboard crews get together and hand out a TEA Award (Technical Excellence Achievement Award). Those who receive this award may use this graphic (inspired by the first winner Spouzic) on their board.

The Board that wins the final Thunder and Lightning round as Discovery of the Year will receive 100,000 premium page views for their board.

The 1st runner-up will receive 50,000 premium page views for their board.

The 2nd runner-up will receive 30,000 premium page views for their board.

The RDS also reserves 20,000 premium page views to be awarded for outstanding achievement in board design (or whatever else we may think up).

Note: While a board is not restricted from competing in the Thunder & Lightning round multiple times no board may win the same page view award consecutively (for example, if board xyz wins the BotY in year 1 they receive both the graphic award designed for that year and 100,000 premium page views. Should board xyz win again the next year they receive the graphic award but they would only receive 50,000 premium page views in that year).

This will be fun, I think. It encourages us to breakout our little ruts.

Thanks, Pastor Rick.

Thank you for the compliment The BlackBat but really, if the board owners didn't do such a great job in designing and promoting their boards I wouldn't have much to do so a big Thank You to RunBoard and the board owners that make this such a great community to be in emoticon emoticon

My part is just icing on the cake so to speak...
