Task Force Ranger @ OA on Sun, June 22
The Storyline
“Rangers Lead the Way” is not just a motto, it is a fact. Each U.S. Army Ranger battalion is capable of deploying anywhere in the world with only 18 hours notice. This is just one of many Ranger stories.
****
As the hot desert sun rose in the sky over the base camp for Task Force Ranger (TFR), the members of the Delta Force and Ranger elements that comprised this forward interdiction team became aware of the heightened activity around the HQ area. Recon and intelligence assets had just received reliable information of an unscheduled meeting between Somali warlord Mohammed Aidid and other top-level leaders of the Habr Gidr clan. This meeting presented a prime opportunity for Task Force Ranger to surprise and capture or kill the man most responsible for terrorism and instability in Somalia.
The crews of MH-60 Black Hawk helicopters attached to the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment began to check their helos and load on ammunition. At the same time, the elite soldiers of the assault force began to re-check their equipment. Each team was more than prepared for the job.
Shortly after breakfast the team leaders were called to a briefing. All 16 available aircraft would be going. Every member of TFR was being called upon for this important raid. Would they arrive in time? Would they find Aidid?
Shortly before noon, the first helicopter lifted off in the stifling desert heat and sped toward the rendezvous village. Suddenly, the radios blasted forth with urgent radio transmissions from the leading helicopters. Receiving heavy fire. Automatic weapons. Anti-aircraft rockets. We’re hit. We’re going down….
Suddenly, everything changed. This was not only an attack, it was also now a rescue mission. Our brother Rangers are in trouble. It was the beginning of the longest day for Task Force Ranger.
