Interview with GIN GLYNN - DARK SUCCUBI

THE REALM Tell us a little about who Gin is, and give us something we won't find anywhere else.

GIN Gin is the kid who came to school with her shoes on the wrong feet. She's the kid who asks annoying questions like why is the traditional gorgeous heroine a well-paid lawyer, executive, or female in a high-powered position. Who says that gorgeous heroine can't be a "severely affected" mom, and the state decides because she is labeled "handicapped," then she can not be trusted to take care of her own children. The state says that it is working in the children's interest, but in reality, the state is breaking apart the family. The same middle-class ladies who swear they know what's best for the children are the same ladies who will have a devastating effect on the children's lives. Who says the hero has to be some gorgeous, high-powered alpha? Maybe the hero is the cynical working-class male who helps her realize that everyone has his own agenda, and if you have to keep one step ahead of the rules in order to keep your family intact, then you put on your running shoes. She doesn't redeem him. He recruits her into believing the same ladies who go to church on Sunday are the same ladies who vote for the guys that bomb the hell out of smaller countries that are no threat.
Aside from being opinionated, I'm a very shy person.

THE REALM How many books have you written to date, and how long have you been writing?

GIN DARK SUCCUBI is the second book I've written, but the first that has been published. The first book I've written, LOKI UNBOUND, is scheduled for release through Whiskey Creek Press Torrid in March 2008. If you compare LOKI UNBOUND with DARK SUCCUBI, then LOKI UNBOUND is closer to a traditional romance, but when Loki is the lead male in the story, the traditional romance breaks down.

THE REALM When and where can our readers find Dark Succubi?

GIN DARK SUCCUBI is available now through Dark Eden Press.

THE REALM What influenced you to write Dark Succubi?

GIN Current events. Dark Succubi is about war as much as it's about romance. You have an alpha male who symbolizes the country that believes it's okay to colonize another country, to use a disadvantaged country's resources for its own gain. You have an alpha female who symbolizes the disadvantaged country that believes it's not going to give up those resources without a fight. Depending on which side of the fence you stand, the alpha male is either the patriot or the fascist. The female is the patriot or the rebel.

THE REALM Why did you choose New Orleans as a backdrop for the story?

GIN New Orleans was a scary place when I was a child. I'd travel south, and I would hear these stories about people getting shot and getting dumped in the swamp, and no one would find the bodies until years later. I'd hear tales about when it rained hard enough, the floods would wash up bodies, and people would have to bury their relatives twice.

The history of New Orleans is chilling too. When I was walking in the Vieux Carre, a gentleman who walked with me pointed to a building and said, "That was where they kept the slaves until they could sell them." Fifteen years later, when I stood in front of the Beauregard-Keyes house, a driver yelled at me, "We were slaves in that house."

And then there were the plagues in New Orleans. New Orleans has a chilling history without anyone making things up for a paranormal.

THE REALM What has writing Dark Succubi taught you?

GIN You can't assume that the reader knows what you're talking about. After the book came out, I was interested in getting feedback. I found out that some people didn't know what a succubus was. I wrote, assuming that people knew what a succubus was.

In one point of the story, I explained the ties between the Guardian Angel and the son of the sorceress, but I relied on the reader being familiar with the antebellum history of New Orleans. In retrospect, I realize that unless the reader knows that antebellum New Orleans wasn't exactly relaxing on the veranda and gossiping about the duel under the oaks, the reader can easily miss the point.

THE REALM Bearing in mind that you are a new writer, what tip would you like to share with other new writers?

GIN There are plenty of kind, supportive people out there, and they sincerely wish you luck. They give you tips because they love writing and the world of writing. Learn from them and pass along what you've learned.

THE REALM What's next for Gin?

GIN I have a non-erotic paranormal WIP, but it's not as tongue in cheek as DARK SUCCUBI. DARK SUCCUBI was symbolic of current events, but this wip is pretty much "let's put the cards on the table" time.

THE REALM Thanks for allowing us to interview you, Gin. Good luck with your sales.
