Coach and Sidelined by Carol Lynne

Carol Lynne's contemporary romance COACH works on two levels. The build up of sexual tension -- the fondling of flesh beneath the table cloth at a pizza parlor, the zipping of a coat to hide an erection -- tantalizes us as well as couple Justin and Luc. This short story, however, takes us a step beyond the warm-in-the-britches state erotic romances strive to create. COACH reminds us that we still have a journey ahead of us when we're dealing with tolerance -- heck, let's call it what it is: acceptance. The couple strive to keep their relationship discreet for fear of discovery and repercussions. Alas, discovery and repercussions follow, and we as an audience realize maybe we are what we don't want to see in the mirror.

Like COACH, SIDELINED is a story crafted in layers. Four years have passed, Justin and Luc are still in love, but their son Max struggles with the abrupt loss of his companion Nick. While addressing the powerful topic of grief, this contemporary story weaves well its episodes or eroticism as Alec, Max's professor, leads Max through a sexual and emotional rebirth. Alec's dominance complements Max's submissive side well. Not everyone greets the relationship with open arms, and again we are reminded that we aren't as forward thinking as we'd like to be, for reasons of our own. The characters become even more human when Alec's family descends on Alec as he recuperates after an auto accident -- an incident that forces Justin and Max to re-experience a traumatic event.

COACH and SIDELINED provide us with a HEA, and after witnessing the emotional tug of war between characters, we feel the characters deserve it.
