TOUCHED BY DARKNESS by Catherine Spangler
In TOUCHED BY DARKNESS, Catherine does a beautiful job of intertwining the developing relationship of the hero and heroine with the external plot. It may seem as if this isn't a big deal, or people may think they want to see more of the relationship or sex between the characters, or less of the young boy in this book, but the fact is that had this book been written differently it wouldn't have been the great story it was.
Each character's emotional angst and personal growth feeds the plot which therein feeds the emotional angst and personal growth. The two are so closely woven together that skipping scenes would leave a huge gap in the story and the book is too interesting and entertaining to put down.
Catherine succeeded in keeping me guessing almost until the big reveal. My fascination with figuring out who did it and my obsessive analysis of what's been revealed gave me an edge. Just as I knew I knew who it was, Catherine twisted it, making me doubt my decision. It's rare for an author to keep me guessing as long as Catherine did.
