We're sad to say that due to schedules and work loads we've decided to close The Realm. However, if you would like an awesome community of writers to chat with and get to know check out the Romane Divas at www.romancedivas.com. They have tons to offer and a huge group of amazing writers! We will be moving some of the information we've put on the forum to our MySpace page, so if you want to keep up with us, check out our blog there. We'll be blogging there in addition to our personal blogs from now on. Thanks for hanging out with us. We hope to see you on the Web!

storyboarding

Hi, I just saw Niki's posting on Storyboarding and as a new writer was wondering how I can get more info on this topic. Does everyone do a storyboard and does it really help.

Re: storyboarding

I do a storyboard, but mine's a bit modified. (Shhh! Don't tell Shelley Bradley!) LOL She does a great workshop on storyboarding. It allows me to see, at a glance, where I need to go and where I've been. It's also great because if I want to change plot around (something I'm actually doing this week, incidentally) I just move post-it notes from square to square instead of the messes that come with scratching things out or erasing.

Re: storyboarding

I don't usually use a storyboard, not even for novels. However, I do plan the big parts, and then just go where writing takes me. I try to get to know my characters first, which sometimes happens by writing a short story or two about them.

I have tried working with a chapter plan (which is probaly similar to a storyboard), but I found it stops my imagination right in its tracks. I have yet to finish the novel I planned with a chapter list. All the fun went out of it after some time, and I've rewritten it twice already. *sigh*

So, a storyboard might be useful for some, and not for others. Writing is an indiviual craft, and each has to find out what works.

All the best for your writing! emoticon

Re: storyboarding

First, welcome to The Realm, Lucita.

Second, Denise, not even I use Shelley's board the same way she does. That's the beauty of it. We all do it a little differently.

Now, the question. No, not everyone storyboards. I didn't for a long time and was terrified of learning how to do it. Now, I wouldn't wan to do a story without it. There are tons of methods you can use to board and they all involve different levels of detail.

For a beginning, if you want to try it outl, you can visit my website. I have some worksheets on there that I got from Shelley when she was teaching me how to board. If you can't complete the worksheets then you need to go back to square one and think about your story more.

I also think I go through these questions in the thread I did where I took everyone through my process of doing my novella from beginning to end.

So, check those out and let me know what questions you have. I've helped Shelley teach her storyboarding class a couple of times, and Denise has gone through it a couple of times. We'd be willing to answer any questions you have, and I can always get Shelley's input to make it more rounded for you.

By the way, here's the link to the Novella thread. A Novella From Beginning to End.

Here's the link to my website where I have the worksheets. Tips and Tools

I hope they help and look forward to chatting more about this, because I learn more every time I get involved in this discussion.

Re: storyboarding

Welcome to the Realm! Sorry, I've been MIA for a week or so. Went to visit Nikki in Dallas.

I got to watch Shelley and Nikki storyboard while I was there...and wow. Course, I'm a pantser, and Shelley gave me the evil eye over that one. LOL! I storyboard after I finish the first draft of my novel. Kind of backwards, but the summaries help me when I write my synop, and it helps me tie up all those loose ends at the end of the novel. Good stuff! I also think Shelley is giving a class in March...if I'm not mistaken. Nikki...is she?

Re: storyboarding

I think she said March for her class. And I used to plot backwards, too. In fact, when Shelley and I team up together to teach her class she has me approach it from the revision end of things that means talking about plotting the board after the book's written.

Once you get used to that, it's easier to plot the board before starting the story.
