It's often enough to be a little social on boards. Welcome new members, congratulate people on sales, follow some of the links, voice an opinion once in a while, share a few of your experiences. For me, it doesn't take a lot of effort, yet it's very much worth it.
I got my first publication through an author group that meets online on a forum. Without them, I would have never heard of that project, much less managed to join in. This happened two years after I joined them, they knew me and trusted me. I think that was the decisive factor.

It is tough to find groups wher you can feel comfortable, but I've discovered a few yahoogroups. When I have a bit more time tomorrow I'll post the links to them. They're groups of writers and readers and they're all very warm and welcoming.
I'm glad you aren't intimidated by us. There's no reason to be.

I'm shy too - don't laugh, Dawn! Anyway, I hate putting myself out there, but I need to and need to connect with others. My husband and I firmly believe in karma - I want to help others out, in support and advice, as much as others help me.
I think the key is to find places that feel comfortable and the reality is that just takes time.
