We're sad to say that due to schedules and work loads we've decided to close The Realm. However, if you would like an awesome community of writers to chat with and get to know check out the Romane Divas at www.romancedivas.com. They have tons to offer and a huge group of amazing writers! We will be moving some of the information we've put on the forum to our MySpace page, so if you want to keep up with us, check out our blog there. We'll be blogging there in addition to our personal blogs from now on. Thanks for hanging out with us. We hope to see you on the Web!

I don't know if this is the right board to post this on, but I need some opinions. I'm working on branding my writing and would love input from you all. For more info on me and my writing, and to vote, go to my website:

http://www.freewebs.com/kristinlawrence

If this should go some place else, I can take the post down and move it.

Thanks in advance!

I know what inspired you, Kristin. Jenn was great. I voted for my pick, and this is a fine place to post it.

I'd picked out my "brand" for my suspense writing, but Ihadn't picked one for my paranormal writing. I've got one that works well, but I'm keeping my options open in the event something else pops out at me.

Nikki,

I like the tag in your signature line. But I'm not the best at marketing (which I'm realizing more and more as my first release date draws near!), so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

Anyone have any good websites for marketing how-tos?

Kristin,

I've learned quite a bit about marketing from watching published authors. It's never a bad thing to join writer's groups and start actively chatting. A web presence gets your name out there adn then when the time comes for you to have a book to promo, you don't look greedy or like a prima donna when you show up and start talking about it.

Also, book videos (You can't call them book trailers unless you have Circle of Seven create them for you) can be a fun way to get your message out there. I have several videos and some other promo stuff I've done on my website at www.nkkiduncan.com. I know I'm forgetting some things at the moment, but I'll post them as I come up with them.

That's very, very true. It's a good idea to show your name (or internet alias) so that potential editors have already heard it. It does help to bridge that first contact. In the end, the story will have to stand on its own, but it'll get your manuscript noticed in the slush pile. Sometimes, that's all it needs.

Absolutely. I'm on a couple of lists and it's amazing to watch the published authors. Some of them, the more liked and successful ones, post regularly enough to keep their name known and to build online friendships with people. For those authors it's easier to come on and say "hey, I just sold this book." And they have an instant support system for it.

Then there are the authors who show up to post a week before they have a new book release. For them, the posts seem to be mostly me me me. My book is out. My book is great. Buy my book. Those authors may have a fan base, and they may sell books, but people don't want to spend large amounts of time with them. And that can translate into fewer sales for future books.

posticon Marketing (was Re: Vote!/)

I find the hard part for me is to find lists where I feel I can really contribute. So many times I see posts on other lists that feel very "me me me" and I don't want to sound like that, so I lurk but don't post unless I feel I've got something solid to add.

That being said, despite my crazy schedule, I'm trying to make an effort to get out there and at least keep up with news, if not actually post a lot of messages.

I'm sorry I didn't pop in to this group earlier. Somehow you all aren't so intimidating!!
