When reading a book...

At what point to you put a book down when it doesn't grab you? I've been patient as of late, and I'll give a book until chapter three. Then I'm done. Great book always capture me on the first page. Like Leslie's book-the heroine coming from a family of assassin's. lol I loved it. And her title? 'Scuse Me While I Kill This Guy' you gotta love a kick ass heroine. :o)

You know, I have so much going on these days that I don't generally give them more than a chapter to capture me. If it's an author that I know and love I'll push through. Otherwise, they don't have long to grab me.

I think a lot of readers are that way these days. There are too many great authors and books out there to be wasting time on mediocrity.

I'll usually give them only a chapter, unless someone tells me it takes awhile to get into it, then I'll give it a little more time.

I still haven't read Kenyon's latest. I'm waiting for the paperback. That's terrible, but what can I say? 24 bucks...and I'd read that book in a day. Anything with Ash in it is a goner.

Re: When reading a book...

I think this is why I have a huge issue venturing out sometimes to look for new authors (which is why a site like this is great because then you get multi view points on a book before buying it).

I have my set favs and those favs to date have not let me down. I can recall putting one book down by a british author who I will never read again. I got about half way through (probably about 200 some odd pages - although it seemed like a lot more then that) before I became too annoyed with the lack of pulling things together that I put it away.

I'll try to finish reading the book - especially if I bought it if I've already started it. If the author is so so I will pick up another of their books before deciding to totally can the idea of buying another of their books.

So I think I might be odd woman out. I will try and finish it - even if I read four/five books while taking a break from it.

You're a patient soul, Tammi. LOL There was one book I read - which shall remain nameless - that was SO bad, it took me a month to finish it. I don't know why I kept up with it. I guess I thought it would pull together eventually.

BTW - Welcome to the board! :o)

If I buy it, I try to finish it. I've only had one that I just couldn't make myself finish. Then again, I read even the bad ones to figure out what not to do in my own writing.

Re: When reading a book...

When I read 'A Clockwork Orange,' I put the book down twice. I just couldn't figure out what the author was trying to tell me. The book had such a rep, I was determined to finish it. The third time I picked up the book, it dawned on me that the author was speaking in the voice of a Brit, and he was making up the lingo like "viddy this." The language was highly descriptive, so that even though the author was inventing the lingo, I understood it. Once I figured that out, I couldn't put the book down.

By the way I took "viddy this" to me "watch this like a video" or "dig this."

(I admit I'm biased in this department. I've been told my release Dark Succubi is very metaphorical)

I don't know Gin, so for I'm enjoying your book (Dark Succubi) very much. It's very different than what I'm used to reading, thats a good thing. I'm venturing out...
