Map of Middle Earth
THE SHIRE
The Shire is a small region in the north-west corner of Middle-Earth. It is an agricultural district, populated by hobbits, and travellers rarely pass through it. The Shire is very isolated from the outside world and the hobbits of the Shire are naturally suspicious of anyone from outside and rarely travel outside themselves. There are many towns and regions in the Shire but the main ones are, Hobbtion, where Frodo and Sam live, Tuckborough, where Pippin lives and Buckland where Merry comes from.
Bree
The village of Bree is situated about a days journey from the Shire if you go by the road. It is the only village in Middle-Earth where men and hobbits live happily together. Bree sits on the conjuction of two main roads, well used, the Greenway, leads north, and south to Dunland and the Great South Road., and which leads all the way through Mirkwood to Esgaroth. So The Prancing Pony Inn, the most popular inn in Bree, is always full of travellers from all over Middle-Earth and many strange tales and rumours are exchanged there.
Weathertop
Weathertop, or Amon Sul, is a large hill situated six days journey east of Bree. In ancient times the men of the north used it as a watch tower before they became the Rangers. It is now in ruins. It is situated at a good vantage point and if you stand on top of it you can see for miles in any direction.
Rivendell
Rivendell, also known as Imladris, is the house of Elrond Helf-elven, bearer of one of the three rings. It is used as a refuge for the elves who are a dwindling race. It is protected by the magic of the elves and no enemy has yet passed it's borders. If travellers seek help or refuge there the lves will give it to them, if they are worthy.
Moria
Moria was once a great dwarf kingdom, but the dwarves mined too deep and awoke an ancient demon, the balrog, and had to flee. It is now orc ridden and perilous to enter. Moria is a huge network of mines, caves and undergound halls, built under the mountain of Carad-Hras. The main city of Moria, Kazad-Dum, is now totally inhabited by orcs. There are only two entrances to Moria. On the west side, the doors of Durin, or Moria-gate, which is guarded by the Watcher in the water. The other entrance on the east side, opens out onto the Dimril Dale, not far from Lothlorien. In recent years before the War of the Rings some of the dwarves of the Lonely Mountain, lead by Gimli's cousin Balin went back to Moria to reclaim their kingdom from the orcs, but were defeated.
Lothlorien
Lothloirien, known as the golden wood, because it's trees leaves grow orange and brown in autumn but never fall. It is the home of Celeborn and Galadriel, bearer of one of the three rings. Time does not pass as normal in Lothlorien, but has been slowed down by the power of the elves, who are sadened by the passage of time. Few travellers ever enter the wood and few who do ever return.
Anduin
The river Anduin, also known as the Great River, flows from the very North of Middle-Earth, the Grey Mountains, down past Mirkwood and the Misty Mountains, Lothlorien, Rohan, Gondor, Minas Tirith, Ithilien and the Black Gate of Mordor before reaching the sea. Yet it is impossible to travel all the way down it because of Rauros, a huge waterfall, which is situated next to the Emyn Muil and Rohan, close ot Gondor. It was in this river that the One Ring was lost when Isildur was attacked by orcs, and where Deagol found it and was murdered by Gollum five hundred years later.
Rohan
Rohan is a land west of the river Anduin and north of Gondor. It is filled with grassy plains and the men there, the Rohirrim use it to breed horses. The main city of the Rohirrim is Edoras, where the king of Rohan lives in the hall of Meduseld. Rohan is also situated next to Isengard nad Fangorn forest, though the Rohirrim have little dealings with the inhabitants of either of these places.
Isengard
Isengard was once owned by the kings of Gondor but since they had diminished the stewards of Gondor took charge of it and long ago gave the keys to Saruman. Isengard is a ring of stony hills at the end of the Misty Mountains. Inside these hills lies beautiful gardens and the tower of Orthanc, but through a chasm there is a large opening underground where Saruman bred his army of Uruk-hai. Isengard is situated very close to Rohan and more importantly Fangorn forest.
Fangorn Forest
Fangorn forest is the oldest forest in Middle-earth, and once used to span from its current location next to Isengard right up to the Old Forest, next to the Shire. It is inhabited by the Ents, tree heards, the oldest creatures of Middle-earth, who were around even before the elves, though it was the elves who taught them language. Because of them it is perilous to cut any wood from a living tree in Fangorn forest. But the inhabitants of Fangorn are little known to the world outside, as nobody except the wizards ever dares to go far into the forest.
Gondor
Gondor, is the land south of Rohan and west of Mordor. It is inhabited by men, and their main city is Minas Tirith, the White City. Since the death of Isildur, Gondor was ruled by the descendants of Isildrs nephew, but they died out and Gondor is now ruled by the stewards, but the legend tells that one day the true heir of Isildur will return and reclaim the throne of Gondor. The men of Gondor, living so close to Mordor, have to defend themselves constantly against attack.
The Dead Marshes
The Dead Marshes are a vast stinking marsh that streteches out north west of Mordor. They are haunted by the ghosts of the men, elves, orcs and so on that died in the battle of the Last Alliance in the second age, and at night the candles of the ghosts can be seen, leading travellers astray into deep water, and if you look into the water of the marshes you can see dead faces. "They lie in all the pools, pale faces deep deep under the dark water. I saw them: grim faces and evil, noble faces and sad. Many faces proud and fair, and weeds in their silver hair. But all foul, all rotting, all dead...I saw there Men and Elves, and orcs beside them." (Frodo)
Mordor
Mordor, is a barren wasteland, ringed on three sides by impassable mountain ranges. The only way in from the west is through the Black Gate, the ruined city of Minas Morgul, home of the Nazgul, and through a secret passage in the mounatins, guarded by an evil monster, a giant spider. Inside Mordor is the plateau of Gorgoroth, a vast desert like plain, riddled with great cracks in the land. To the North of Mordor is Orodruin, or Mount Doom, a firey mountain, in which the one ring was forged. Also here is the tower of Barad-dur, the fortress of the Dark Lord Sauron, if anyone was brought to the dungeons of Barad-dur, they would never escape.
