Scenario newbs
A group of us are heading down for the scenario, and I had a couple questions. This will be our first time at Bowie as well as our first scenario, so we are wondering what to expect.
First, is there a place to keep our stuff? I know we'll be buying a couple cases of paint, and I'm assuming we don't have to haul them around with us, but you also don't want to see your Marbellizers walking off...
The other question: what makes a scenario diferent? Aside from being dressed like pirates, what makes this different from a regular day at the field?
Thanks in advance!
Dave

Re: Scenario newbs
As long as you keep all of your stuff together, and near someone elses (preferably in a car) you will be fine.
What sets scenarios apart from regular walk on play is that you don't stop. It is 9-4 non-stop paintball. That said, you certainly can't play for that amount of time easily without coming back in for air or paint. During those times you get a break. However, those are not scheduled and you do them on your own timetable. There are enough people there to compensate for your leaving the field. When you're walking off you could see anywhere from 1-20 people walking back on and vice versa.
Also, the number of people greatly differs. On a normal walk on day you could get 40 people playing, but in the scenarios you get 500 playing...all at once (granted some are getting air and paint at some given time).
There is also food provided (you have to buy it) by a caterer, they are a BBQ place. Excellent food.
Feel free to PM me with any more questions.

Re: Scenario newbs
Dave, first of all you and your friends want to be Pirates!
The scenarios are great because it's more to it then just shooting up a box of paint. Each team has missions that are worth points. The team at the end of the day with the most points (that will be the Pirates of course)win the game.
Because you're using the entire field there is a lot more opportunity for strategy such as flanking maneuvers that comes into play. Scenario play is more about which side is more organized, out thinks the other team and plays smarter versus who fires more paint.
See me before the game if you decide to sign up to be a Pirate! Just look for the Grim Reapers banner on the back of my car.

Re: Scenario newbs
^^^That being said, scenario games are also the home of some of the most intense firefights you will ever see.

Re: Scenario newbs
Dave, as you can see from the helpful posts, our players are the best natured paintballers in the sport!
As far as staging area you want to get to the fields early. Safety briefing at 9 AM and game on at 10. Try to get how ever many vehicles you have together in a bunch, parking does get crowded and it gives you a kind of personal area. We don't have much problem with pilferage or theft but it happens everywhere when it's least expected. I'd secure things in your vehicles and you can even lock them up and give registration your keys for safe keeping (don't take them on the field).
A small number of players "dress the part" but everyone has a place. It's a good idea to have 2-way radios for all of your players so you can be more effective of the field.
Let us know where you're coming from and how many are coming. Have you registered online? Are you aware of the discounts?
Thanks for coming down to see us. Let me know how things go for you.

Picture it like a super Walk-On day. Almost all of the fields are combined into one large field.

Re: Scenario newbs
Also, scenarios differ from regular days of play in that they are mission based rather than just eliminate the other players.
As an example, you might be given the mission of retrieving some supply crates for your team. You have a specified time to do this and you can bet the other side is trying to retrieve them and/or keep you from getting them. In short, instant fire fight. These missions are worth points which your side accumulates. The side with the highest total at the end wins.
More strategy is involved and the side that gets its players to work together the best, usually wins.
Additionally, once you are hit you aren't out for long. You can go to the parking lot to refill air and paint, or if you still have enough, just go back to your command post on the field and wait in the dead box. Reinsertions are every 15 minutes. As the game wears on, you will actually welcome that time as a chance to wipe off your hits and catch your breath.
Finally, scenarios have special roles and props. You will see medics, who have limited ability to heal hits, and engineers and demolitions experts who can build or destroy things. You might also see motorized tanks (in OA's case you will definitely see at least one tank), plus all sorts of player powered planes, rocket launchers, and any number of varying props to recover during missions.
That being said, you aren't forced to do the missions. If you choose to just go out and eliminate as many opposing players as possible, there's still a place for you on the team. Just remember, there are no points for eliminations, but having more of the opposing team in the dead box will make it easier for your side to accomplish their missions.
It might seem daunting at first, but trust me, you'll get the hang of things quickly. But for your first time at a scenario, I'd recommend a few things.
1. Double check all your gear a few days out and fix or replace anything that isn't working
2. Read the details of the scenario and review the game map prior to coming out
3. Listen to the safety briefing and pay special attention to any game specifics the game producer announces.
4. If you're getting ready to reinsert, ask your general at the command post if there are any missions going on now or coming up soon and volunteer to help. If none are going on, ask where you can be of assistance or follow some more experienced scenario players out on the field. Don't be afraid to ask questions.
5. Most importantly, get there early. Even though the safety briefing might be at 0930, you don't want to be there later than 0800. You need time to register, get your paint, air and chrono your marker, and gear up, all before the briefing. You almost never will get it all done with much time to spare. Getting there as early as possible makes sure you are ready when the briefing starts and you are on the field when the opening whistle blows.

Re: Scenario newbs
Wow! Thanks for the replies!
Flying Ace: Don't worry, Pirates was never a question. I've spent too many days at Renn Fest watering holes to show up in my pajamas! We also figure that splotches of paint are a good excuse to retire some of the older pirate gear, so we will be dressed. Granted, I don't know how an eye patch will fit over my mask...
Cooter: I'll be registering online sometime soon (probably later today), and I plan on grabbing some paint as well. We do have two renters, but I am assuming that is something to note when registering. If not, I'll call Karen. 2-way radios are a great idea, I might have to grab some. And if this day is anything like the time I played in Rosedale, I'll be back.
Everyone else: thanks again for your info! I absolutley loved the times I have played, and look forward to more. I've wanted more experience under my belt before I started playing scenarios (I've really only played once before) but I just couldn't pass up Pirates vs. Ninjas!

Re: Scenario newbs
Whenever someone asks this I normally give them the following response:
a) When you get shot, you're not out for the rest of the game. You go to the deadbox, as usual. However, you're released back into the game at :00, :15, :30 and :45 of each hour. So you're never out of the game more than 15 minutes unless you choose.
b) The game doesn't stop until it's over, usually around 4pm. While you're getting air, paint, lunch, or doing whatever, the game is still going.
c) There are "missions" throughout the day. Concrete objectives that need to be satisfied to gain points for your team (see d)
d) There is no "we win!" game-ending situation like hanging the flag or eliminating the entire opposing team. No one knows who the winner is until the end, when the points are tallied.
e) It's bigger. 450+ people divided into two teams playing on 80+ acres. No eliminations off the break
f) Tanks. 'nuff said.
