Give Aways at the End of the Game

Just a thought but perhaps OA could figure out how to select a winner for a give away only to the rental players at the Battle of the Bulge to encourage those players to purchase rather than rent gear for the next scenario.

After all, the experienced players already have a gazillion helmets, barrels and markers coming out of our ying yangs.

Ace, you have a point, but some of my friends, who are enthusiasts can't/won't shell a couple of hundreds in equipment.

So, I'm for sticking with the current tradition. I actually think it might attract more serious players to the OA field rather than some rental players who ends up leaving and never coming back.

Pennies for your thoughts...

P.S. Sunday is going to be a hell of day!! Can't wait!!. Go Blue!

Not to mention, renting equipment makes a little bit of money for OA.

Yes, but selling gear and getting upgrades makes even more money for OA. I've certainly spent more in purchases than I ever would just renting.

So why not have a special door prize awarded just to the rental players? Encourage them to come down to the store and buy gear.

I understand your point too Lunaticpainter but going to just a few scenarios a year and renting equipment each time it makes sense to purchase. Even if your friends start with a simple low cost Spyder marker like I did before upgrading, upgrading and upgrading more. Besides even a low cost Spyder to get started is going to be better than simply a rental unit.

As for me Cowboy, I do have gear coming out my ying yang. 7 markers, 5 helmets and 3 paintball vests and about 15 assorted barrels. I really need to sell some excess gear!

Speaking of which if anyone wants a slightly used Flatline for a Tippman Custom 98 I'll be happy to sell it for $50 or best offer.

Ace, you say that the upgrades people purchase also make money for OA. But you fail to realize that maybe the profit isn't that great considering they have to buy these upgrades to stock the store with. I'm sure they get some kind of deal on some things by purchasing in bulk, but that aside...I believe rentals bring more money in than you buying upgrades.

I disagree.. Let's say you rent a marker 3 or 4 times a year. Now say, you buy a Tippman A5 for example. There are a gazillion upgrades you can purchase.

For example you start with the basic A5. Then move up to the response trigger, then you upgrade to an electronic trigger, try out several barrels some of which are over $100 each, upgrade your mask a few times, buy a vest, gloves, etc... The list goes on and on.

A player that invests $$$ in his own gear is a player that plays more then someone that just rents once in a while. Thus more cash for the store overall in the long run.

There's some truth to both sides, but without being privy to exactly what OA's expenses are for both stock on hand and maintaining & running rental games, we'll never be able to determine on our own which side edges out the other for profit.

I've heard through other sources that throughout the paintball industry, markup on equipment is actually very, very low, and it's the expendable supplies that actually make the most money (no real surprise there). So, my guess is that the equipment you buy vs. the rental price you might pay is neck-and-neck, and both are peanuts compared to what you spend on paint, regardless of whether you own or rent.

But if you barely have money to play once or twice a year, where are you getting the money to buy the upgrades?

If you don't have money you don't have money.

I think Ions are a field owners dream.

1. Easy to sell. Roughly $200
2. Tons of upgrades available
3. Shoots fast out of the box.

#3 is the best for owners. If I understand paintball economics (I don't), paint is where the money's at. Dawg. For Shizzle, etc.

I really appreciate OA not gouging us for premium paint. A case of paint at other scenarios can run $80+. Craziness. $55 for a case of Marbellizer is a pretty good deal regardless.
