If a leader is not leading the attack and is in fact leading from the back then the unit can suffer from serious setbacks in leadership, causing the lead elements of the unit to become lost and confused, leading to further loss of leadership (which may or may not be present anyway).

It's not "leading from the back"! It's "being the vanguard for the eventual offensive in a retroactive direction that inevitably results from a commander prepositioning himself in the back"!
