Throat mics are overated, well actually they are not if you spend $300+ on one then they work really well.

I have tried several different brands, ranging from $50 up to nearly $150 and never found one that was 1) comfortable and 2) worked well.

Best mic I have found so far is a boom mic, there are lots to pick from. Most of the mics are that similar you dont have to worry about them, the part to think about is the bit that goes in your ear. Do you want the speaker to be inside your ear or resting on the outside? You should try playing at least an hour in each different type to see which you are most comfortable with.

The ones that go inside your ear get itchy beyond belief (well at least to me) and drive me nuts. I prefer the ones that clip around your ear and sit outside.

Whatever you buy make sure you get the correct pins to connect to the radio. Also consider which radio you plan to buy and think about if you ever decide to upgrade that radio in the future. From experience I am on my fourth radio design each with its own pin connectors requiring me to change mics/headsets each time.

My personal favourite is the lapel speaker mic.

I feel sorry for harp players, because they are always inducing in themselves a sense of nostalgia.

Re: radios

Here's a couple of sites I've dealt with. They sell good stuff and if you have a question about compatibility with your radio, they can help you find the right connector for your mic.

Pryme.com

Handsfreeusa.com

For radios, we use a mix of brands of VHF radios in the $120-$300 range and have had good results with them after dumping our GMRS radios about 5 years ago.

If you are serious about this, you will need to invest the money into it. It is a big expense up front, but the payoff is worth it.

That's a double-edged sword. With GMRS, you have a good chance of being able to sync up with a larger group, but the whole reason we switched away from GMRS was that so many people use them, we couldn't find a channel that wasn't already occupied. Sub-channels help some, but inevitably, you end up with somebody else in your conversations at some point.

I'm going to be buying the predator mic to be used specifically with motorola phones and walkies. They are about $20 a pop but they get great reviews as long as you have a motorola walkie thats compatible with it "series 5000 and up". if we hate them they also come with a wrap around earpiece so we will at least use them for that.

I'll second this. We bought GMRS radios for the one scenario I've been to, and halfway through we had all turned them off as useless. Finding a clean channel was just about impossible.

Re: radios

that is why we got away from them also

but there is no sense in spending the money on the VHFs unless you plan on playing a lot with your own team and then the rest of the team has to fork out the money, than there is the programing kit you need to buy

everyone here has staterd out on or as a team knows that that all statred out with the cheap radios and then once they found a solid team, then upgraded

all i am saying is be wise with you hard earned money

Agreed that the VHF's are most (or only) useful when you have a committed group to use them with, but if we have all tried the GMRS and all found them to be pointless, I guess the message is to skip them entirely until you get that group together...
