Ratings For Longboard Comps
With all the talk about this contest and that contest, and whether it'd be value-for-money to attend, why not have a rating system similar to the pro circuit. Obviously it'd have nothing to do with prize money, but could take into account Entry Fee, Location, Facilities, (the ever popular) Paid Judges, Ability to be mobile in case of crappy conditions, Access of competitors to information (like score sheets!!) and a decent audio / announcement system. They could be given a star rating so people can see roughly what they can expect if they choose to attend, and contest organisers can see if there are areas of their contest that could be tightened up.
Using this method, I'd be giving a contest like the Magoo or the Central Coast Classic a 5-Star. Contests like Crescent a 4-star due to inflexible organisers, Southside Classic a 4-Star due to Entry Fee of $60 (too high). And then a contest like the 7-Miles of Smiles would be a 2-Star due to a generally piss-poor set-up. What do ya's think? The owner of this website could put the rating next to the info on the page that has the Entry Forms on it. Sure, it's just a thought, and probably needs heaps of fine tuning, but, hey, it's a thought.

Re: Ratings For Longboard Comps
Surfajp I think that you might have the answer to this really BIG problem we should have a rating system for contests It would give perspective competiors an insight into the contest but like you said it would take a little bit of fine tuning - I also would rate the Magoo and the Central coast open as both 5 stars but i don't know about the 4 star for the Crescent comp though maybe a 3 because If heard so much negative feed back from it and whats the story about the southside $60 entry fee of a one day contest (how much money do they want to make)
Hopefully this idea will be put in motion

Re: Ratings For Longboard Comps
Surfajp, interesting notion, but have you ever organised or run a surf contest. If you haven't, it can be very easy to sit on the side and offer opinions. I too had opinions, but having been a contest director etc for the past few years, there is alot of work that goes into preparing for a contest, by many club members. Some locations are not "moveable" and therefore you are at the mercy of whatever Huey dishes up over the 2 days, then not to mention council regulations, maritime regulations, insurance, the list goes on. So you may rate my contest say a 2, then maybe no one enters, then you end up with less contests..... Suck it in, forget the rating, enter the contest, have a good time, meet your mates, chinwag all day and have fun..... if you get to take home a trophy, that is a bonus.

Re: Ratings For Longboard Comps
Hey there Punters. Yep, I have run a few comps in my day. I've looked at lots of contests, both big & small, and tried to take something from each of them. And yes, Mother Nature is the only variable you can't control to any real degree. You can however look for the best possible conditions within the local council's area of management. That can leave a fairly big area to work with. For example, at the Aussies (not my geographical area, but just as an example) the organisers had from the punt at the northern end of Port Macquarie all the way down past Laurieton to find the best possible conditions, whilst still remaining in the boundaries of the council who issued their permits. Start of a new year and start of the contest scene again. And as for winning trophies, I rarely ever got past the first round in any comp, so I'm certainly not in it for the glory. I'm in it for the Stoke!!

Re: Ratings For Longboard Comps
Hi All,
I'm all for keeping it fair and simple. Having one person or a panel rate comps is not that. Therefore, why note have a voting system on Steve's site. All comps listed and we all vote, if we want too. Ok, people can manipulate the system by voting many times, lets assume all votes are posted honestly. Surely it would not take to much to set up? The thought of running a comp that rates very low is not nice, however, it may make organiser look at better rated comps and mirror as well as they can. This producing better comps at all locations at all times throughout the year.
Cheers James Boags

Re: Ratings For Longboard Comps
Hi JB. Sounds like a good idea. I might have a look at setting something up for this.
