Re: Contests Feedback
Malfunction Update
May 31, 2007
After meeting with Chris Robbins, the Gold Coast City Councillor for Division 14, the organisers of the Malfunction Surf Festival have been asked to show that there is sufficient support from the surfing fraternity and the local community to consider overturning the Gold Coast City Council’s current directive of forbidding surfing events being contested at Snapper Rocks apart from the opening rounds of the ASP mens & womens WCT events and to be given exclusive use of the area in which the surfing competition is to take place.
Mindful of the rights of recreational surfers the organisers of the Malfunction Surf Festival propose that the Malfunction be given approximately 150 metres of surf at the start of the Superbank at Snapper Rocks in which to hold its surf competition. This will allow approximately 1 kilometre of the Super Bank for recreational surfers to enjoy.
To ensure the safety of competitors and to allow them the opportunity to compete without interference and fear of intimidation from the small minority of unreasonable recreational surfers it is proposed that the Malfunction competition area be made exclusive during times of competition.

Re: Contests Feedback
This is something that is really worth getting behind. Wouldn't it be nice to be treated as generously as the professional shortboard fraternity. Log into one of those sites and add your two-bobs-worth.

Re: Contests Feedback
Just returned from the Layback Longboarders Winter Classic. Another great contest. Well run. Well patronised. Good to see local non-surf-related sponsors getting on board too.

Re: Contests Feedback
Went to the annual Spring Classic again this year. Paid my $60 to catch 3 crappy waves, then get eliminated. Weather was crap, though not quite as bad as last year. Still a pretty big event with loads of competitors. Seemed pretty well run too. Two problems - no one wanted to judge. The head judge was constantly having to beg for judges. Ended up only having 3-man panels. Other thing was the presentation went too long. Kept on having breaks all the way through it. Couldn't hear what was said because no one would shut up.

Re: Contests Feedback
Just returned from the Pieces Of 8 down at Warilla. Only around 50 competitors, but a great day. Well run. Plenty of tucker. Good company. Team Farago was there in force and took a few prizes home as well. Hopefully get a few more competitors next year.

Re: Contests Feedback
What's going on with the Australian Titles. Heard nothing from Surfing Oz or Surfing NSW. Only thing I've got is from a few competitors who are saying that there is no running order, and that everyone has to turn up at 6am each day at Home Beach to find out what heats are on and when. What a load of crap. You spend big money to go to the comp, and you might find that you first go in the water on the Wednesday all because the swell is better for the Open that day or for the Juniors. And have we got trained longboard judges or are they just going to be Surfing Australia judges who are in the inner circle and probably see Longboarding as a "novelty" event. There are experienced Longboard judges out there in every State. If they're not used then it's a bloody farce. The NSW Longboarding Association should've taken the bull by the horns and run the event themselves.

Re: Contests Feedback
Well Surfajp, you certainly sound wound-up over this. I do tend to agree with some of what you have said. When the Aussies were first scheduled for Port Macquarie I emailed Surfing Australia and said that I'd like to help out at the Titles. Although I'm an accredited judge (and specialise in Longboarding events), I knew that I wasn't experienced enough to be part of the Judging Panel, but I was happy to help out in any area. Received a reply from SA within a couple of days saying thanks for the offer and that my email had been forwarded onto Peter Hunt at Surfing New South Wales, as he was running the event. The parting comment in the email reply was that "I'm sure they can use your extensive experience". Heard nothing from SNSW for a few weeks, so I basically copied the email I had sent to SA, outlining my experience and my desire to help out. Again, received no reply. I was speakng to a couple of the regular Aussie Title surfers and they both said that my chances of helping out anywhere was pretty slim, because SNSW / SA have their own group of people (inner circle as Surfajp put it) who do the events. It would've been nice to at least have received a "thanks, but no thanks" reply. I search the Surfing Australia / Surfing NSW webpages every day, looking for updates or any info on the event so I can put it here on the website, but other than the two updates that are pretty old now, there has been nothing. I'm still going to be going up to the Titles, and I'll be reporting on them for this website everyday. Just because SA / SNSW seem to be keeping people in the dark, I'm going to try to at least keep the general public informed.

Re: Contests Feedback
The Aussies are in full swing now. Have had reasonable surf - good weather. This might sound like a silly little complaint, but there is no food tent. What contest doesn't at least have a BBQ going. What a great money spinner this would've been for some enterprising person?

Re: Contests Feedback
October in Port Macquarie. What a stupid time to hold a contest of this magnitude. Crap surf and on-shore winds. Great. No food tent - what sort of a contest doesn't have food available. Knowing the Port macquarie area, you'd probably be up for about $10 just for a sandwich and a can of Coke. Heard through the grapevine that the contest next year was going to be part of a longer festival in the Port area. Hopefully we (Longboarding) won't end up as some novelty event.

Re: Contests Feedback
See that the NLA are "talking to various councils" with regard to holding the State Titles. PLEASE not Bonnie Hills again. Getting sick of that place. Rude locals in the water. VERY average surf conditions. The only thing I loved about it was the great people who ran that fantastic food tent. Hum!
