Re: New theory about the moon
I'm all for trying to figure out what the most likely story is. It's funny that the writer of the article uses the phrase, "tantamount to cosmic blasphemy". Science is not a religion, you go with what the best data gives you until more data comes up with a new idea. It's going to take people smarter than us to sort that out.

Re: New theory about the moon
What about the theory that it contributed to the size of earth's core? Also, why Mars and not some other planet, or if it was captured, why couldn't it have formed like other planets without a collision at all?
My gut tells me that Malcuit's reasoning concerning temperature seems to be flawed. 100,000,000 years is a hell of a long time, and it doesn't seem likely to me that it would take that long for the earth to cool down after a collision, even as huge as the more widely held theory describes. Call it an argument from incredulity on my part, but most geologists (who know a lot more than I do on this subject) seem to agree that it wouldn't take that long.

Re: New theory about the moon
Yes. I have very limited knowledge on this subject, having only recently started reading up about it but I want to see more science before I change my mind about where it came from.
A little like every new humanoid fossil that they find being seen as the 'missing link'.
Even though Discovery are talking about it, it could just be another reason for them to get people to watch their channel which has become a little boring with endless repeats lately.
I'd like to see where this theory goes though. I haven't closed my mind about whatever comes next I'd just like to see a lot of corroborating evidence.

Re: New theory about the moon
The media likes to latch onto anything they can to attract viewers, whether there's enough supporting evidence for it or not. Some are worse than others, though. I can only hope Discovery is letting it be known that this theory isn't widely accepted at this point, and explain why it isn't.
