For people wanting to come:

Re: RAIT Unchained 2K7
Hats off to the RAIT organizers for their hard work in putting this show up.
Having said that the sound was terrible. RAIT has bad luck or something but the sound was a mess for each and every band, smoking speakers, clueless fernandez. Only the bass drum sounded good Razz
Anyway I was supposed to be judging alongside P-man & Ashish but unfortunately both were unable to make it.
1. Amidst The Chaos - The sound, it just wasnt working. They sounded the worst today though they were tight for the most part of the gig. Vocals were good barring the 2 clean lines I heard Razz anyway was fairly okay, the guitars were doing all sorts of wierd things. I did my best to judge as fairly as possible keeping into account the environment. Anyway they did mostly OC's.
Score: 24/40
2. Pipe Dream - When they came on stage I was like WTF!! Because I judged this band previously at some concert and they were very amature and I was shocked to no end how this band made it above Skincold. Anyway they started off with Audioslave's Chorcoise (whatever) and it was pretty solid compared to ATC's sound which was messed up terrible. And these guys seemed to have got their sound more or less in better condition. All well till they did Pearl Jam's - Animal which was butchered. The young lady singer just didnt have a voice for Pearl Jam or the key was all wrong because she couldnt keep it in key. Followed a rather poor redition of communication breakdown. A average OC and a version of Testify that I did not enjoy.
Score: 21/40
3. Silent Lucidity - A reformed version. Did not do it, Chakku started the set very badly out of tune but sort of got it together for Eclipse and 1 more song in the middle again before taking off. They had some timing errors here and there. Guitars were abysmally low and making the weirdest sounds. Apart from all the technical snags, the guitarists both were not great at the solo playing. The bruce lee kick in the start was the best part of the set.
Score: 21/40
4. Colosses - Sound hassles continued bit the rhythm guitar patch was quiet bad, irrespective of the sound. Again tighness wasnt always there, I'm guessing most bands had this problem because of the monitor sound. Anyway the vocals were okish, some of the songs have nice parts here and there but I'm yet to go like wow thats a great song.
Score: 24/40
5. Cosmic Infusion - Band that got the crowd moving. As Delhi people say 'FEEL AAYA' but musically a bit sloppy here and there, blast beats going a bit hay wire, timing here and there. Good originals. Hated the Dimmu cover, was not done well this time. But enjoyable overall
Score: 25/40
6. Blackhole Theory - Were smart to send Afaque to the console to set their sound. Took their time. Played Kreator and some OC's. Very tight performance. Great vocals and Naveen also impressed me. Best sound and performance of the night so far. Flaws, guitar playing was a bit choppy here and there. Good show, they came 2nd place.
Score: 28/40
7. Decibel - Heard a lot about this band. Started with Painkiller and all well till the vocals kicked in at a completely different key. Vijays throat wasnt working apparently Razz They followed it with an OC which I didnt enjoy. Again vocals very off. GOod drummer and bassist. Followed by Rust In Peace. Decently done. Vijay's throat gave way by song 3 and he left the stage. the rest of the band did some snake like music. Overall decent and would want to see them on a good day.
Score: 24/40
8. Myndsnare - The last band for the day. They are pro and it showed. They were super tight (barring raining blood) and Yasmin just blew me away with her incredible drumming, man she is ****ing fast on the double bass. Sandesh was kickass on bass. Overall the tightest performance of the night. They played Pantera's Strength Beyond Strength. Also conditioned human.
Score: 29/40
Overall I know a lot of the bands faced terrible sound problems. But it was pretty much the same for all the bands.
I definitely feel that the demo screening process is required because it certainly improves the quality of the competition, however the quality of the sound needs to go up as well.
Once again congrats to Myndsnare and BHT. And Kudos to all the other bands for the performances. It was nice to see everyone put in 100%
Cheers and Stay Demonic

Re: RAIT Unchained 2K7
As an RAIT student never seen a RAIT gig with worse sound...It was horrible.....the initial sound checks came out good..but once the competition started, the sound went haywire. The bands seemed to be part of some nautankee making weird sounds. Anyway all said and done, as one of the organizers I had problems like every organizer does since the word go...
I started off the day with a fist-fight with my treasurer, then one with the sound-wala..who promised me "a sound engineer" for the competition. Then I had people calling me a million times asking me if I was sure if MyndSnare was competing.
The sound console that was supposed to be set at 9 in the morning was done only by 3:30. Then I had bands trickling in one by one..Decibel arrived pretty early. They sound-checked first. Sound-check took some one and a half hour. The competition started at 6. Started on a bad note with P-Man pulling out of judging. by 4ish Ashish called up and said he couldn't make it either with him having to attend to a friend who had met with an accident. So it was only "The Stealer of Demons" who was to judge.
With each band wanting not to play first, we eventually had to draw lots for the 5 local bands. The competition started and it kept going bad with bad sound.....Well I went off searching for my General Secretary to get the cheques for the to-be winners. Couldn't catch the last 3 bands, which were the best of the lot. They made best use of what sound we had. Sahil has said the rest..Hope that next year the new team does a much better show. cheers!

Re: RAIT Unchained 2K7
well firstly we were told to reach at 2ish for the sound check we came there and saw there was not even a kaala kutta at the venue...the went to see SL jam in the basement...wid nothin else to do after that went to booze...
on comin back decibel had started soundcheckin...they had a good guitarist...aka apna desi petrucci sarka!!!
they did DT "as i am" for soundcheck...
then we went on stage for our soundcheck were given 10 mins...unsatisfactory sound check....
the show started....
1. amidst the choas-did a tight set,mostly ocs...liked sunneith's clean vox....sound ****ups....
2. pipedream-hated the band, din like a single thng worth mentioning, except that the vocalist was cute..they were actually the band that created the "chit controversy"
3. silent lucidity-not their best show have seen better, chakku's voice was tired after rigorous jamming till 3ish in the morning i guess...drumming was not that tight...
4. colossus-there were ppl sitting in the back singing frozen potrait in our song...there was this one particular jaadya who was really annoying
5. cosmic infusion-decent performance.....the dimmu borgir cover was ****ed up towards the end though...
6. black hole theory-wasnt that good i wud say din like their ocs were tight though...did some kreator cover
7. decibel-were bad the voclaist just cudnt touch those notes...the guitaist was good...
they had a 7 stringer really hoped to hear AS I AM but they dint cover it...oc wasnt worth mentioning
8. myndsnare-kp had a lotta probs wid the sound....yasmin was brilliant...tightness was mindblowing...din like there ocs that much though...
finer aspects:
1. bad sound
2.good crowd
3.sahil as judge(the poster boy of KC college)

Re: RAIT Unchained 2K7
@sahil-i feel most of the bands faced sound problems...the demos they sent wud have given a better picture of the musical ability of the band...
it aint necessary that skincold gets every gig, pipedream wud have been better on a cd!!!
no offences to skincold,
cheers

Re: RAIT Unchained 2K7
Hi, I am the vocalist for the band 'PipeDream'.
Without sounding overly defensive and at the risk of drawing more flak than we already have drawn, there are a few things I'd like to make known to everyone. Going to be LONG, if you care to read.
a) Yes, we are an amateur rock band. We don't invest all our time into music making. Music is a priority but it doesn't consume us; some of us are studying, some have parental regulations to adhere to, some of us have day jobs that we can't help but take very seriously. We're not into extreme/death/black/thrash metal. In that regard, clearly, we were the only band to play the music we played at RAIT. Since predominantly, the place was packed with metalheads, it is possible that there may have been some prejudice against us to begin with.
However, when we got on stage, we were received well, despite having never played before. The gig that Sahil was referring to was the first gig we ever played at. And yes, our performance suffered there, owing to the fact that our guitarist's adapter was screwed up and keep jumping out of the plugpoint. I was basically singing to the drums and the bass for the most part! Had that not been the case, perhaps his opinion of us would've been different. Perhaps. And Sahil, you did mention on one of the forums that music taste factors into decision making from the judge's standpoint. Every band, save for ourselves, played hardcore metal.
Also, the first song we played was "Cochise", not "Chorchoise (whatever)". So I reckon you don't really dig that kind of music. Also, I wasn't off key on "Animal", I know a thing or two about pitching. I've had royal throat trouble for the last few weeks, and while doing the stage act, I went off on a few notes. That is the song we sent to the guys at RAIT and our cover was commended. "Testify", yes, I concede, it wasn't very good and we ran like we were missing a train or something.
Oh and here's the thing. We never did "Communication breakdown"!! We did "Immigrant song" and we had people in the front there singing with us and they knew what we were playing. Also, I introduced the song before we started playing it. So what was that about? The two songs are drastically different from one another.
We can all agree that there were serious sound issues faced by all the bands. Initially, before we even descended to the stage, we were told that our time had begun. No offense meant here but the previous band's drummer left without removing his snare that was tightly screwed on and adjusted for his sound. There wasn't a sound guy to help with attaching the relevant mikes. I asked twice for a mike for backup vocals and it wasn't given to us. My drummer Rahul had to handle all of that singularly, remove the other snare and attach his own and then adjust. Okay, so I know this is Myndsnare we're talking about, but they had 2 guys plus the drummer herself helping out when they were to play. That's a little much. If everything is already skewed before the contest starts, then there IS no contest! And as it is, most of the contestants already had a formidable rival in Myndsnare, who are Myndsnare, for Pete's sake!
Personally speaking, if the vocalist from 'Decibel' hadn't left the stage because of his vocalling difficulties, I would think that those guys deserved to win. The drummer and guitarist were awesomely tight and despite what happened, they did a really swell job. 'Black Hole Theory' and 'Amidst The Chaos' were good too.
2 final issues. There was no "chit controversy". Our bassist had a workshift he couldn't get out of and couldn't make it to the venue before 6. Like everyone else we wanted to soundcheck. Of course, eventually, there was no soundcheck before the show, we had to get on stage and wrap it up quickly and begin playing. Anyway, the day previous, we'd spoken to a RAIT organiser and briefed him. When we arrived for the show, we were simply assigned first position. We were well within our right to ask as to why that was. Also, we asked on what basis were we allotted the first slot. We weren't provided with a logical answer so we simply asked that chits be drawn in all fairness and hell, if we were first then, we'd play, even without a bassist if we had to! There was no controversy. We're new and yes, we aren't that tight, but we can't be pushed around.
Also, one last thing Sahil. You may have disliked us from the previous show and you're liable to, no problem. But please, refrain from making comments like "WTF? Why were they chosen over Skincold in the demo selections?" etc. etc. because that is a very unfair thing to say. There was a judge and he made a competent decision, just as you try to do when you're judging. It could just as easily have been another band's entry versus Skincold's and you may have questioned that too. It's like insinuating that we pulled some strings or that only our entry was the wrong choice for the night, and not any other band.
In retrospect, seeing as how this turned out to be a trip for the metalheads, we were out of place. But, we had fun onstage and we had a good, welcoming audience. The RAIT guys helping out at the back liked us and we were appreciated by quite a few, if not everyone. We were happy with the outcome, despite the troubles we had to face, because it's part of the deal. We'll try other things henceforth, more progressive rock, some art and experimental and graduate on to more challenges since we'll have other musicians on board shortly. We'll work on tightness, that's number one priority.
Thanks for all the critical feedback, nonetheless. Cheers to all who participated and as a disclaimer, no offense meant to anyone.

Re: RAIT Unchained 2K7
Okay, slight correction... 'Silent Lucidity' didn't play metal. They played some grunge/alt. and some classic/ pop rock (U2 etc.). I suppose they were the band right after us. We were famished and we needed our vadapao and cutting chai We were on our way out when they got onstage, so I recall them very vaguely and don't know what else they played.
So yes, they were the only other band, besides ourselves, who didn't play death/thrash metal.
