Of SWAT, ‘RESOUNDING ROCK’ and out of place mosh-pits....
Folks who arrived early were forced to endure a rather inauspicious start to their outing. An apparently nameless and quite forgettable opening band appeared at roughly 7:00ish and toiled through a handful of Sepultura, Sabbath and the like. It was extremely annoying to see the group's lead singer prance about as an absolute invalid instead of appreciating his proverbial moment in the sun or engaging the crowd with friendly banter. The band dismissed any worries about the quality of sound and the conduct of the sound-guy at the console though.
Next up were Prayaag, a band I respect for reasons beyond fake patriotism. Their vocalist, an apparent north-easterner, reminds me of the ‘Gorkha-rock’ movement that roots from ‘Glennary’s’ the corner bakery chain at Darjeeling and Sikkim. If the vocalist is reading this, am sure he knows what am talking about. All that blah about hind-rock seems a lot insignificant when his band takes stage. The band is making original music that primarily connects with reality as perceived by humanity. I am sure this band will soon be a record company darling and I wish them all the very best. Apologies though, I am not familiar with of the songs they covered. The lead guitarist had a brilliant tone; the rhythm was overtly treblish though.
Intermission saw a chorus (at least 300 strong) of "RESONANCE" steadily grow, reverberating off the magnanimous open-air venue that incidentally happens to be the place where I saw this band for the first time (KAYOS ’06). Mihir officially announced the release of their first original composition ‘WATERTIGHT’ and the addition of another member to the band. Precisely then, the crowd was treated to a brilliantly mastered version of Watertight a song that’s stuck in my head as I write this review. As the energy level reached a fevered pitch, the band hit stage and opened the night with thumping bass snarls on ‘y go home’. A nervous albeit composed keyboard artist was then called for as the vocalist introduced ‘knocking on the heaven’s door’ as a karaoke song. Being able to pull off with this song as a part of their repertoire speaks tons of this band and their vocalist. In a scant few minutes time, the die had been cast and things only got better from that point on. The band displayed subtle hints of marked improvements as complete performers in all departments. They came across as four solo projects with a phenomenal on stage chemistry, not to forget the latest addition who made her presence felt adequately. Moving through the set with ease, the band pulled a few surprises from their bag of tricks. The bass line on Plush was neatly cut. So were the drums on Watertight. I think the drums on their original composition, of all things makes them more freestyle than any of the covers they do. Thanks to Watertight, I refuse to call this band classic or alternative. From now on, I shall call their music, ‘RESOUNDING ROCK.’ With barely a moment to catch their collective breath after the opening salvo, freaks in the audience went wild upon hearing the first crunchy, fat slide on a Resonance concert staple: ALIVE. The solo was impeccable with placid improvisations on the concluding phrases. By now the crowd renewed with their mosh-pit that took off at the beginning of Thunderstruck. A phenomenon rarely witnessed at such concerts. Stairway followed next with a slight mess-up with the vocalist’s mike. Had to be redone and must say, the band did justice to Led Zep. The lead guitarist may be small in stature, but remains a giant among the new breed of feel oriented guitar players witnessed this season. The signature sound drawn from the bass guitarist’s Yamaha is amazing, not only in its bone bashing precision, but also for its consistency; vocals and the rhythm tone too has not changed one iota over time, if it has its only for the better. The drummer easily fits into one of the best in his category of upcoming artists.
Then, it was time for the band of the night--Vayu. Frontman 2BLue is the obvious focal point and has the most animated stage presence. He possesses a powerful and passionate voice which he uses to chilling effect. He's a gifted singer, largely articulate, yet he packs a tremendous visceral wallop, chewing up phrases and then abstractly spitting them out for maximum impact. Set-list was doted with a bit of Led Zep, deep purple etc. Not much can be said in plain words about the song that made me sit down and close my eyes---Shine on. ****, few bands possess the ability to get your hair stand on the back of your neck. Vayu is undoubtedly one of them. Somewhere in the middle, VAYU seems to be a group of jocks and and a band, metalheads can find some common grounds with; as evidenced by the diverse crowd who filled the arena. This was the second time I saw some colorful demographics at a VAYU concert. More and more middle aged and women in the audience is definitely an encouraging statistical detail. Only the most devout cynic could deny the band's grand presence live. Raavi dominates, surging with an electrifying act that seems mostly instinctual, the roots of which quite probably are mysterious even to him. Schubert's fluid bass lines propelling most of the melodies do not undermine his role as an active keyboard-artist. Lastly it’s purely to Aatur’s credit as a riveting drummer that his public display of mild confusion with the world is at all compelling. The emperor may have no clothes, but he does have a really great body. No puns. Indeed, when it comes to seeing VAYU in concert, one might expect these guys to walk onstage and go through the motions of playing popular songs for an hour and walk off, feeling justified in doing so given their role in reinvigorating the classic wave, redefining Indian rock music with Raavi’s album, and dominating headlining slots thru the last year. They did precisely that. Sparking an hour-long set of high energy, obscure and hit songs from over the years, alternated between restless pacing and standing frozen in front of select fans for brief moments of posing for the irritating cameramen on-stage the band cruised its way to the closing song. Burn saw another mosh-pit thing going on. That was unfortunately the end.
Reality struck, I met some folks who shared my deprivation and we made our way out for some beer at Janta’s. For now, I shall wait for Demon’s event on the 7th May. I urge all like minded classic and alternative freaks to check some ‘RESOUNDING ROCK’ with ‘Resonance,’ ‘Something Relevant’ and the others there.

Re: Of SWAT, ‘RESOUNDING ROCK’ and out of place mosh-pits....
Got excited when read abt the concert on gigpad...at last a good gig after exams...n after exams whole day of job...was very bugged..
this gig refershed me a lot...
missed the first band..my friends told good u missed them..they weren't good..
saw prayaag for the first time..they were good..i never knew hindi rock is also good..their oc rastey were awesome especially coz of ****in awesome drums by viru..
Then was resonance...i was in this gig especially for them..they got a chick as a new member in their band who played keyboards..
they were tight..watertight their oc was awesome which ran through my head again n again..they played ac/dc's thunderstruck which saw the day's first moshpit..
They played alive n when the last part came n jason started playinf the solos'..i went crazy n started a mosh pit which become huge with many people joining moshing badly...belive me this was my first mosh n i went damn ****in crazy...i never thought that i will start a moshpit that to in classics but as i told i attended a gig almost after two months n there was a bomb inside me which was very curious to ignite when rock was on..
when they started stairtway...i got electrified and decided to start mosh again for the last part...which i did..which again gradually become a big pit...
there were 2 guys on my right showing attitude commenting wht people mosh on classics at the time of alive...i dont understand y many people hav such attitude y cant they enjoy rock irrespective of whatever genre of rock is goin on..me n my friend caught them between the mosh pit during stairway pushing again n again...hehehe
anyways...resonance is getting better n better n i love them...
then were vayu...did some normal stuff..tight as usual...

Re: Of SWAT, ‘RESOUNDING ROCK’ and out of place mosh-pits....
From PRAYAG:
A big THANKS to all who cared to listen to us & appreciated our music. We will hopefully get to play more music for you soon.
@flyingv: Bro I am a north-easterner awrite(still wondering if my looks were enough to reveal that) and you have made me nostalgic!!! How i wish I could get to the land where only rock ROCKS!
@jimmypaige/rockrocks: Thanks for your support. We're glad we didn't let you and many other listeners down.
Kudos to the SWAT team for a superbly managed event! Everything was JUST IN PLACE (Though we have a little something to complain about the lesser time-slot allotted to us even when we were told we had a 45 minute slot - We had kept the best for the last!!).
Anyways, great gig, super-crowd...we lived every moment.
Cheers!

Mihir my bro,
Stop embarassing me in public this way, will you? I mean, it touches me that you feel this way, and I'm really glad you do! But heck, this is embarrassing!
Anyways, I'm a fan of your rendition of 'Walking in Memphis'. You covered it beautifully at NJJBTB on your birthday and I was glad to be there!
Best regards always,
