Hello everybody

In January of 1980 I took a Winter Study class entitled “Electronic Sound”. It was taught by a visiting Physics professor who sold and serviced synthesizers as a hobby. In that class we learned the physics of how synthesizers create and modulate sounds, and got to experiment with a variety of them, ranging from the gorgeous analog Moogs with mahogany cases, patch cords and church organ keyboard to the latest Japanese models from Korg, which had recently introduced polyphony and digital patches. It was an amazing class, culminating with us each getting to produce a composition. After having studied piano in grade school and drums in high school, I finally felt I had found my medium. However my situation was such that after that class, I had no avenue with which to pursue this, since these instruments cost thousands if not tens of thousands of dollars and recording technology still required equally high cost tape recorders and studios. And, as often happens, my life took off in a very different direction.

Fast forward 25 years. A piece of software I had for sound editing, Syntrillium CoolEdit Pro, announced a major upgrade that brought it into the league of higher-end production tools such as ProTools and Sonar. When I purchased a new computer, I loaded it with 2GB of RAM, a good Creative Labs sound card and a large hard drive, and I added a Creative Labs Prodikeys keyboard, which includes a basic MIDI piano keyboard built into it. I did some research and purchased a very highly rated software-based synthesizer, Absynth 3 from Native Instruments. And then I started experimenting.

The sounds that Absynth produces entranced me. It took months of experimenting before I came up with anything presentable, but my previous music training really started to come back and things started to gel.

I am requesting a showcase for tracks I have produced, and I hope you enjoy listening to them as much as I enjoyed producing them. As I write this, DJ and producer Lance Cashion of Proton Radio has offered to release the title track (“The Next Door Opens”) on his digital-only label Slo-Motion Music, and I have another track I am hoping will get picked up by another label.

Thanks!
