Re: Regarding our appliances & such
Agreed. Too many people are asses about hardware vs. software, analog vs. digital, vinyl vs. cd vs. traktor, etc. As long as we're making and performing music, eh?

Re: Regarding our appliances & such
Sorry for the day-after type comments. This thread is taking a turn too interesting to pass up.
Hearing you argue about this is like listening to the two halves of my brain go at each other. Steady bastion of sanity I am... LOL!!!
In my workflow, software & hardware are interdependent on each other. Hardware to get the groove going and software to mix it right.
But I've been moving... 90% of my hardware is in storage and won't be set up until the end of June when my studio is finished (we hope).
I've been working on a pretty bare-bones setup for the last couple weeks: G5 Quad, Ableton, Reason, Digital Performer and a handful of VI's.
Let me just say that I miss my hardware. Terribly!!
I have 20 some faders and knobs in front of me but it's not the same experience at all. It makes me want to take skeet shooting up as my pastime!
Next Monday I'm gonna raid the storage spot and grab a few things to tie me over. This is depressing.
As for TC Powecore: I've used this extensively on both Mac & PC. So far, the Virus has been too unstable to use, but then I'll say the same for the T1 editor on Mac.
Then there is the bandwidth issue. I've never gotten more than 30% usage out of one of these cards due to PCI buss bandwidth restrictions. This is regardless of any buss mastering order I stack my PCI stuff in, or any other system customizations I've done. I can't wait to try the new Express card due out in July. I'm hoping this new flavor of PCI will be the answer.
Make lots of noise & be happy!

Re: Regarding our appliances & such
I don't have any bandwidth issues, my firewire's built in.
Unfortunately, I don't own a powercore so it's irrelevant.
I just got a microKONTROL for my midi surface... it's really, really great. Even more reason I will not go hardware.

Re: Regarding our appliances & such
I know what you mean tmeracz! I let a trusted friend babysit my keyboards while I'm off to Germany & I miss them sooooo much.
Bought an Alesis Photon 25 so I can control my vsts & what not & it's just not the same. I need my Virus KC! Crave my Andromeda! And it's only been 3 days! No telling what 4 months will be like!
Kalemika, I'm sorry but I just find your last post really ironic. You got hardware which makes you not want hardware even more....

Re: Regarding our appliances & such
Well you can't go ENTIRELY software. You need to have SOME control over it. But it makes it entirely apparent to me that dropping the cash for a hardware synth when I can buy a control surface is just not worth it.

And that's great and all, but girls are always asking to touch the knobs on my Andromeda...

So's mine, but I've only ever used PoCo PCI. It would make sense that the FW version would poll data a lot better on a dedicated buss, but try stacking a bunch of different cards and watch your bandwidth drop off like mad.
How do you like the Micro Control?

Re: Regarding our appliances & such
I love the -hell- out of it, seriously. I mean, it's enough that it's a solid, cheap, well-built controller, but those labels above the encoders and faders are just amazing, especially when running in native mode on Reason 3. Probably one of THE best mini controllers ever built, if not THE best. I'm simply saying that because I think that for some people the novation remote may be a better choice, but other than that... if you've got $300 to spend and need to make every dollar count, microKontrol is the way to go.

Re: Regarding our appliances & such
I'm quite broke right now and just starting up. I use the following in the TECH Center (the biggest computer in my school and quite possibly the nation): an Apple PowerMac G5, Garage Band 2, and an M-Audio Keystation 61. The following I use at home on my Dell Dimension 8200 desktop and will use on my Dell Inspiron 2650 laptop too: Rebirth RB338 v2.0, iSound to sample patterns I make on Rebirth, Nero Wave Editor to clean up the samples and make them loop friendly. I know I still have a lot to learn and one goal for me would be to own the real Roland TB303 Bassline, Roland TR808, and Roland TR909. Plus the Roland Juno Alpha II cuz I gotta have the hoover sound too.
Basically I also hope to be able to transition from software to hardware or play with both as time progresses for me.

I'm beween the LE Series Novation controller and the microKorg.
I'll get my hands on both on Saturday & see what's gonna work better for me. I just want something small enough to hold in my lap & tweak my softsynths.
Novation looks like it has some better modulation surfaces.
How is the learn mode for microKontrol?
It's possible to map unsupported synths to it, ya?
