Puppy health questions
I discovered that my puppy has demodex mange and I was wondering if there is anything I could be giving her to help boost her immune system.
She also still has her baby teeth and the vet said she should have lost them by now (she's 3 1/2 months old) so I was wondering if that could just be an OEB thing or if I should worry.
She's my first OEB & I really would appreciate any other advice you have to give.
------------------------
Ok, I found this remedy and I was wondering if anyone has ever or would ever use it on thier dogge.
20ml hydrogen peroxide in 2 ltrs of water and two table spoons of borax laundry powder.
The vet gave me Mitaban, and I looked that up & it's pretty strong stuff, so I don't know if I should use it, if this home remedy would work.

Re: Puppy health questions
You may need to get a new vet. They dont start loosing teeth till at least 4 mnths and than it takes a couple more weeks.
I dont know anything about the mange.
A good suppliment I have used before to bring bulldogs around is NUPRO.
I dont know why good vets are so hard to find for this breed. Alot of the vets assume they are very close to EBs with the health probs. Ive also heard of vets that are SCARED of Oldies so they dont give them proper exams. Also heard of bad vets claiming Oldies will all end up with bad hips just like EBs, without even ex-raying, than if they do ex-ray, they compare them to Labrador hips, DUMB. Sorry, I just get so tired of hearing about these terrible vets.

Re: Puppy health questions
I'm actually not happy with my vet. I'm pretty sure he thinks she's an EB despite what I have written on her record. He asked if I was going to breed her and I said I had planned on it but am not sure yet and he told me not to do it because she would have to have a c-section and if I wanted a puppy to go to the pound. Well wouldn't you know on my way out I see a picture of his family & their pets, 4 pure bread dogs. Nice way to practice what you preach. Not that I think he was the breeder, but if you have a problem with people breeding dogs don't keep them in business by buying a pure bread, idiot. Plus, he didn't even look at her body, I pointed out the spots to him, so I guess the 40.00 exam fee is just for putting your dogge up on the table, weather she's actually examined or not. We're moving to Oregon in October though & she's done with her shots for the year so if she has a problem I'll look into another vet. Some people are just dumb. This weekend a lady told me that pure bread dogs who have blue eyes are blind, and another lady told me that the one blue eye she has means she's deaf in that ear. Some real geniuses running around out there huh. I just give them a puzzled look & say "oh really, I didn't know that". Anyways, thank you for the tip, I'll look into the NUPRO.

Re: Puppy health questions
WOW!!! What a stupid Vet! It can take up to 6 months to lose all puppy teeth, and some say maybe even longer. I've never paid much attention. LOL!!! Another stupid things is you can't just assume the dog has Mange and give the people the Mitaban dip. The stuff is Toxic. He shouldn't have even given it to you. You have to make sure your in a well ventilated area, and that you don't get it on your skin. (For me if I can't get it on my skin than neither can my dog) You have to do a skin scrapping for Mange and check for Mites. Mange is not seasonal. If your dog gets spots and then they go away on their own, and come back at some later date then it sounds like allergies. Full blown mange the dog loses all of it's hair or darn near all of it. It depends on how long you take before you start treating it. This Vet is a hazzard to society. He's not only treating you poorly, but he's full of very wrong information. I would not use anything on your dog.
Describe to me more about what these spots look like, and if they are changing. If they are getting better then leave them alone. A good Quality dog food, and maybe a multi Vitamin is great for your dog. Other than that I don't believe in suplements. Dog food companies spend millions of dollars figuring out what will keep them healthy. I don't mess with that.
Find another Vet ASAP. You can e-mail me directly if you want. bully_pups@yahoo.com

Re: Puppy health questions
He actually did do a skin scraping to make sure it was mange. He showed me the mite and even wrote down the name for me to look up on my own, just about the only thing he did right. He did not tell me how toxic the mitaban was though, luckily I know to look things up on my own & not just believe everything I'm told. I'm glad you guys are here for me to ask because I'm thinking my vet has never even seen an OEB before. I switched her to Authority Large Breed Puppy food, from Petsmart. I still need to decide on a vitamin though, someone else recomended NUPRO. I thought I would start giving her things like carrots and liver for treats instead of store baught treats, what do you think about that? I know that some things are toxic for her though so I wont give her anything without checking first. I gave her a carrot this weekend and she loved it. I think I have a firewall setting too high or something so my email acount isn't working right now, but I will email you if I have any more questions, I mean WHEN I have more questions. Thanks a lot for the offer, I appreciate it. (And I'm sure my puppy will be much better off for it too.) ]

Re: Puppy health questions
Just because he found a mite doesn't mean your puppy has mange. I really would like to discuss this more because it's a good topic. All dogs carry the mite, and if a vet scrapes enough they will find one. It's the quantity they find that will tell them if it's full blown mange or not. Also if the puppy gets better own his own then that is good and it should not come back. That means his imune system is strong. If it's a seasonal thing then it is not mange. It is alergies or hot spots. Did it get what looks little pimples of puss on the sores? Did the puppy lose a lot of hair or just in one spot? Vet's don't have to know OEB's. They are just like every other dogs as far as anatomy. They don't have anything strange about them. That's one thing we are trying to produce as breeders. A healthy dog that has no weird quirks about it. No breed specific problems. I like Vets to know a lot about bulldogs though because if you are going to have a problem it's going to be a bulldog problem. My Vet is an English Bulldog breeder and AKC Show Handler. He's very good with what he does, but I've had lots of idiot Vets too. You are always welcome to ask any question you want on this board. We will always try to give you an honest answer. Please never feel like a question is to small to ask. We've all been through different experiences and can help each other out. You will never stop learning.

Re: Puppy health questions
He found 5 or 6 mites on the slide from 1 scraping, and he showed them to me. I get what you mean about OEBs not having weird quirks, but I think my vet needs to know the difference between an OEB & an EB. I know a lot of things are the same with all dogs, such as mange, but a lot is different too. The OEB seems to have many advantages over the EB. I think if my vet is going to be diagnosing health related problems he should know the difference. I understand from what I have read that the OEB is free breathing & whelping, can handle physical work outs, ect. Now my vet told me if I breed her she will have to have a c-section. So if I just believed him, as many people would, then what happens to her when she’s due to deliver? Is he going to give her an operation that she didn’t need? I had wanted an EB for years & years so when I finally decided to get one this year for my b-day, I did some research first and found that the OEB was a better choice. It was the differences they have that convinced me of that. I know the OEB has EB in it and it may develop bulldog related problems, but it was specifically bread to be a whole different dog. (I’m just practicing my bit for future breeding purposes, how am I doing? LOL.) I do feel comfortable asking questions here on this board. Believe me, I plan to. I’ll take advantage of your experience rather than let my puppy suffer because I didn’t want to ask a silly question. I would have asked a lot more by now, but a lot of times I can just read through the questions already posted & find the answer. I do have another question now. Do you have any suggestions on vitamins? The vet said she should have a stronger immune system when she's about 6 months, so should I give her something till then or should I let her system straighten itself out? Thanks again.

Re: Puppy health questions
I still have the question of If your dog got better on her own? Also any multi Vitamin is fine. The dog will use what it needs and expell what she doesn't. If the dog has had Mange and doesn't get better without treatment then she should not be bred. Mange is Hereditary.

Re: Puppy health questions
Im telling you right now put your dog on nupro for a few months and have her spayed. You and your dog will be much happier in the long run.

Re: Puppy health questions
It looks like it's getting better. I have never seen it before though so I will just have to keep a close eye on it to be sure.
